Red and near-infrared light are studied under photobiomodulation therapy — PBMT. The reason it keeps appearing in recovery research is its relationship with the mitochondria, specifically an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase that plays a central role in how cells produce energy.

After training, your cells need ATP — the energy currency of the body — to repair tissue, reduce inflammation, and restore muscle function. In summer, that demand is even higher because the body is simultaneously managing heat stress. When energy production is lower, everything downstream slows down.

PBMT research focuses on how red and near-infrared wavelengths interact with cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria — supporting the ATP production that powers cellular repair.

A 2024 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that PBMT improved muscle endurance and supported recovery from strength loss and exercise-induced muscle damage. The effects varied by dose, timing, and training status — which is why consistency and the right setup matter.

Not all light wavelengths interact with tissue the same way. Red light at 660nm is studied for surface-level tissue effects. Near-infrared at 850nm penetrates deeper — past the skin and into muscle tissue — which is why it's the wavelength most studied for post-training recovery.

Infrared heat adds the circulation layer that light alone can't provide

How to structure heat and light sessions during summer training
