The thing everyone gets wrong about the mirror.
You looked somewhere around 51 and thought that something had changed and you were not imagining it. Then you told yourself you were being vain. You were neither. It was a cliff, it was measurable, and nobody told you it was coming.
What else went in those five years.
The half nobody mentions, because it is not visible in a mirror.
Body composition
Fat gain roughly doubles starting about two years before the final period. Lean mass declines across the same window, continuing to about two years after.

Cardiovascular risk
It accelerates through the transition. That is the American Heart Association scientific statement in Circulation, 2020, not a wellness opinion.

Sleep
In SWAN, difficulty sleeping climbs from about 30% premenopause. Across the literature, sleep disturbance in this window runs 43 to 69%.

What you keep
Muscle is the one on this list you have the most say over, and it is the one nobody mentions at the appointment.

The skin is the part you can see. It is not the part that matters most, and it is not the only thing that moved.
Why nobody told you.
Eighty nine percent of women between 45 and 60 say they feel ignored by advertisers. Forty four percent of women over 50 find the advertising aimed at them patronizing. Seventy five percent say it is all about appearance instead of how they actually feel.

You are 27% of what gets spent in this country and less than 2% of what gets shown. That is not your imagination either.
We are not going to pretend we have always been better at it. The category has talked at this reader for thirty years. The least we can do is hand you the numbers and let you decide.
No, a sauna will not give your collagen back.
A sauna does not put collagen back. Nothing sold on the internet does, and anyone telling you otherwise is taking your money. What twenty minutes of heat can be is the other half of that window, whether you sleep, what you keep of your muscle, and what your heart is doing while you are not thinking about it. That is the half that is still yours to move.
What the heat is actually doing while you sit in it.
Full spectrum infrared reaches three to four centimetres into muscle and joint instead of only heating the air around you. Your heart rate rises, your vessels open, you sweat. It supports recovery and supports sleep. Medical grade red light is built in, 660nm and 850nm, two wavelengths because they work at two different depths.
Source: Penetration depth is the manufacturer specification for full spectrum infrared emitters. Recovery and sleep are supported, not treated. Vatansever and Hamblin, Photonics and Lasers in Medicine, 2012, on near infrared tissue penetration.
Kowatzki and colleagues, Dermatology, 2008. Forty one volunteers, regular Finnish sauna against no regular sauna. The sauna group showed more stable epidermal barrier function, higher stratum corneum hydration, and faster recovery of water loss and skin pH after two sessions of fifteen minutes at 80°C.
And we will say this out loud: the volunteers were aged 20 to 49. Not her age. It is the only controlled study on sauna and skin physiology that exists, and it was not run on women over 50.
The study that finally included women.
Almost every sauna headline you have ever read came from a study of 2,315 men.
The one that included women arrived in 2018. One thousand six hundred and eighty eight people, 51.4% women, mean age 63, followed for fifteen years. Risk fell in a straight line with sessions per week, with no threshold, so more was better, continuously.
That is an association in one population, not a promise about you.
In their own words, women described sauna bathing as restorative and emotionally grounding, and reported better sleep and less bodily pain.
The same paper records that some found it counterproductive. We print both, because you would find it anyway.
The hardest part of red light therapy is standing in front of it. You're already sitting down.
Panels sell on their own for $300 to $2,000 and ask for 10 to 20 minutes, three to five times a week, standing there doing nothing. Same length as a sauna session, same frequency.

Six hundred and sixty nanometres works at the surface. Eight hundred and fifty reaches into muscle. In the photobiomodulation literature that pairing is the best supported one, and a 2017 meta-analysis of eighteen randomised trials looked at red light and delayed onset muscle soreness against placebo.

What Tuesday looks like.
Most owners land on four or five sessions a week, twenty minutes each. Most go before dinner, some first thing. It is warm in about fifteen minutes, so you turn it on when you take your shoes off. You shower after, not before.
It runs from about 100°F. You do not have to sit at 158. On a bad day you sit low with the door cracked and the light on.
Which one, and what it asks of your house.

From women over 50 who bought one.
I am 57 and I run it at 110 with the door cracked. I sleep through the night now, which I had stopped expecting. Nobody sold me on that, it just happened.
Assembly took me and my daughter closer to an hour, not thirty minutes. Worth it. Four stars because the instructions assume you have done this before.
Honest review: hot flashes and high heat do not mix for me, so I only use it low. At that setting I like it. If you are hoping it fixes the flashes, it does not.
