Key facts
About 60% of a HYROX race is running, on progressively tired legs.
The knee is the most commonly injured area in HYROX athletes.
Running is the most common cause of HYROX injuries, ahead of the stations.
Heat after training supports recovery and supports sleep. It does not prevent injury.
01

Every HYROX athlete pictures the sled.

The 152 kilo push at station two. The hundred wall balls at the end. That is not what stops most HYROX athletes.

In a 2026 survey of 418 HYROX athletes, half had reported at least one HYROX-related injury. Most came on gradually, not in a single moment, and the most common cause was not a station. It was the running. About sixty percent of race time is running, and it gets slower after every station: in Season 8 race data the average first kilometre was 4:20, and the second was already 5:22.

A separate twelve-week study that followed HYROX athletes found the same thing: the knee was the most injured area, most injuries were overuse, and running caused more of them than the stations did.

It does not happen at station eight. It happens in the weeks between races.

02

It's not an injury yet. That's the problem.

It is the Tuesday run where your legs felt like lead, because Saturday's race sim was still in your legs.

The sandbag lunges you broke into four sets. The last two kilometres you jogged. The week your knee felt tight coming down the stairs, so you trained through it.

In that same survey, the one training habit tied to getting hurt was how many HYROX sessions people did each week. Not age, not experience. Volume. None of that goes in your log. It is all the same thing, arriving slowly. By the time it has a name, it has been there for a month.

03

A few minutes of stretching. A massage gun in a drawer.

You stretch your quads against the rig while the next class files in. You bought the massage gun. You foam roll when something already hurts.

You sleep badly after a race sim and train again the next morning.

That is not a criticism. It is what almost everyone does.

Your sessions have a time in your week. Recovery gets whatever is left over.

Minutes after

In a randomised trial, 47 inactive adults with at least one heart risk factor were split into three groups for eight weeks: exercise, exercise plus fifteen minutes of sauna straight afterwards, or neither.

The sauna group came out ahead of the exercise-only group on cardiorespiratory fitness and systolic blood pressure. They were not athletes, and it is one small trial. In athletes, a 2025 trial gave team-sport players ten minutes of infrared sauna after training, three times a week for six weeks. Increased muscle soreness only showed up in the group that skipped the sauna.

This is not instead of training. It is the fifteen minutes after.

05

Heat after the hardest hour of your week.

A gym sauna heats the air around you. Full spectrum infrared goes past the skin, three to four centimetres into muscle and joint. Into the quads, the calves and the knees you just ran eight kilometres on.

Your heart rate climbs. Your blood vessels open. You sweat. That is the mechanism, and it supports recovery without anybody promising you a faster time.

The bonus

The hardest part of red light therapy is standing in front of it.

You're already sitting down.

A panel costs three hundred to two thousand dollars on its own, and the protocol is standing still in front of it several times a week. Nobody does that after a race sim. You will sit down after one.

It is in the back wall. Not an upsell, not an attachment, not a subscription.

Most owners land on four or five sessions a week. The typical HYROX athlete trains about eight hours a week.

For a HYROX athlete that is just every hard session.

It has a time slot now

Turn it on before the session, sit in it when I get back. That is the whole trick. I have done more recovery in two months than in five years of owning a foam roller.

Sleep after a race sim is the difference

Saturday nights after a race sim used to be restless. They are not now. Four stars because I wish it warmed up faster than fifteen minutes on cold mornings.

Good, but measure your doorway

No complaints about the sauna itself and my legs feel better the day after a stations session. Measure your doorway before it arrives, getting the boxes round the turn at the top of my stairs was a job.

Drink water first and start with shorter sessions. Heat straight after hard training is extra load on the body for the first week or two.

The gym sauna is there when the gym is open and someone else is already in it. Yours is fifteen steps away, straight after the session you did at home or the drive back from the gym.

Rest, food, water and sleep do most of the work. Heat afterwards supports recovery and supports sleep, and fifteen minutes is enough.

In a 2026 survey of 418 HYROX athletes, the knee was the most injured area, followed by the back, lower leg and hip, and running was the most common cause.

It supports recovery and supports sleep. It does not prevent injury or make you faster, and you should drink water and build up slowly.
